Lorem’s Song

Mal

All was still well for a few days. Mal knew it was in her mind, but she was sure the days were getting longer. By the time they stopped at night, she was exhausted. They’d barely finish eating and cleaning up before Mal would fall asleep.

“I’d really like a soak,” Ryph said. “I’m pretty sure we slept somewhere soggy last night. I feel soggy.”

Eagy rolled his eyes, although he glanced down to himself. He felt it, too.

“There’s a bird village close by,” Chesh said, his smile mischievous.

“And have you figured out that birds are not food?” Eagy asked as if this were a conversation they’d had recently.

Ryph snickered.

“I haven’t eaten you,” Chesh said, smirking, his fiery eyes dancing.

Eagy gave him an impassive look. His cheeks were tinged ever so slightly. Ryph laughed loudly.

“I’d like a soak, too. I’ll spare the birds,” Chesh said.

“Settled. We walk the extra today so we will make it there tonight!” Ryph said excitedly.

That meant a longer walk still. Mal sighed. Perhaps one of them would carry her. She grinned but didn’t ask. She could walk.

To pass the time, Mal had them talking about who they were going to find next. She was only at three of seven men if they were going by her Snow White theory.

“What about the Hatter?” she asked.

“Which?” Eagy asked.

“The Mad Hatter.”

Chesh laughed. “Have you met the Mad Hatter?”

She shook her head. “He’s almost always a main character in the retellings, even if he’s not a good character.”

“Perhaps at one time he might have been an option. That time has long passed,” Eagy said.

Chesh nodded.

“Why?”

“Well, as you said, he’s mad.”

“I think you’re a little mad, too. Perhaps less than Ryph and Chesh, but I’m fairly certain you are.”

Eagy’s ice blue eyes met hers. “Fair,” he said, a whisper of a smile on his lips. She wanted to kiss him then, for some reason. “But he’s long gone. There’s no sanity left in him these days.”

“What happened to him?”

He shrugged.

“The same thing that happened to everyone,” Chesh said. “With the passing of time, little by little, we lose our minds.”

She frowned. “Okay. What about the dormouse? Sometimes the dormouse is useful.”

“Demru?” Ryph asked, frowning.

“Sure,” Mal said. “Names change in stories. I don’t know what he’s called here.”

“The dormouse is Demru and I rather hope you don’t take a liking to him,” Ryph said.

“I get tired of asking this same question, but why?” Mal asked.

Chesh grinned.

“He’s a bit of a righteous ass,” Ryph said.

Mal continued suggesting random characters. By the time they reached the village in the treetops, they had a very long list of nos and a very short list of maybes. Chesh had been their only real idea.

“I really hope this doesn’t mean we have to go back and consider Lepa one of my seven. I really didn’t like him,” Mal said.

Chesh laughed. “Lepa is a lot of fun.”

“Yes, that’s exactly what I thought of him,” she said, rolling her eyes.

This village was a lot different than the last. The houses were smaller, closer together.
